Kovelong Beach

Kovelong's original name was Kovalam, but the British could not pronounce it properly, so the name of this place was changed to Kovelong. The people living here are considered to be the first surfing people in India. There are many water sports on this beach which are also a lot of fun.


Five Rathas


The Five Rathas are a group of rock-cut temples, built in the Dravidian style. These temples are named Five Rathas as they look like chariots. It also looks like a Buddhist monastery. Among the five temples here, the Draupadi Temple is the first, which is located just inside the main gate. This chariot-shaped temple also looks like a house. Then there is Arjuna Ratha, in which Lord Shiva resides. After that, Nakul and Sahdev Ratha were built. Inside it, beautiful elephant idols are made, the carvings of which are extremely beautiful. Next to Nakul and Sahdev Ratha is Indra Ratha. After that there is Bhima Ratha. It will be a lot of fun to see this group of five chariots built in the name of the five Pandavas and their carvings.


Shell Museum


You must have seen many museums, but have you ever seen a museum that houses a collection of sea shells? Here you will find that museum. Here you will find many types of shells, along with people who provide information about them in the museum. This place is perfect for children.

Apart from this, there are other places to visit like Sadras, Bagh Ki Gufa, Krishna Guha etc. where you can go for a walk. The accommodation on the beach is similar to that of Goa, so for a change, you can also do that. The best time to visit Mahabalipuram is from March to December.


Arjuna's Penance Site


Arjuna's Penance site is a famous place in Mahabalipuram. This place is a favorite place for students studying architecture. The way the stone carvings are done here is amazing, which is why tourists especially come to see this place. It is believed that this artifact was created by the Pallava people. If you want to visit this place, you should take a local guide with you so that you can learn about the historical stories associated with the place. Most of the people who come here come with a guide, so that they can get information about the stories here.

               To reach Mahabalipuram, you have to go to Chennai. You can reach Chennai by flight or train and from there you can reach Mahabalipuram by road. If you want to go by train, go to Chengalpattu Railway Station. From here, Mamallapuram is only 29 km away, from where you can easily reach Mahabalipuram.
